"Keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come." -Matthew 24:42
The disciples must have been dumbfounded when Jesus told them He didn't know the date of His Second Coming. Apparently, only God the Father knows the day and hour of Jesus' return and He has chosen not to share that information with anyone, including Jesus. So instead of a date to mark on the calendar, Jesus gave His followers of every generation the eight signs of His coming at the end of the age. These epic events will all occur sequentially at one point in human history, and Jesus said we must keep watch for them because when they appear we'll know that His coming is near, right at the door.
The first sign is the placement of the antichrist's image (maybe a statue) on the temple mount in Jerusalem, and all people will be forced to worship it or perish
The second sign is the worst persecution of Christians in human history, targeting those believers who refuse to worship the image of the antichrist
The third sign is a mass exodus from the Christian faith by people who don't want to be persecuted. These rebels will then persecute family members and friends
The fourth sign is the Good News of Jesus Christ being proclaimed to every nation on earth by an angel of the Lord. Then the age of Christianity will come to its end
The fifth sign is when the sun and moon go dark, and stars fall from the sky. Clearly, Jesus is going to demand, and get, the world's attention before He comes again.
The sixth sign is the appearance of the sign of Jesus in the sky. We don't know for certain what His sign is, but all people on the earth will see it.
The seventh sign is the arrival of Jesus on the clouds of heaven with great power and glory, and all unrepentant sinners will see Him and mourn.
The eighth and final sign is the gathering of true believers to meet Jesus in the air. This sign will occur in full view of all who are being left behind.
